Introduction to the Middle East
The Middle East is comprised of several countries that vary greatly, so for the purposes of this guide we will focus on those cities and areas that have an established financial center or high degree of wealth. The Middle East includes many countries such as Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Yemen.
Why the Middle East?
The Middle East includes several powerful economies such as Israel, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. More importantly for family offices, the region is home to vast amounts of wealth–largely from oil production for countries like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iran and Qatar. The wealth being created in the region has not gone unnoticed by family offices looking for clients and fund managers looking for a steady source of capital.
Family Offices in The Middle East
There is not a lot of information available on family offices in the Middle East, largely because many Middle East family offices are not formally structured as a family office, yet perform many of the services of a family office. Still, there are several family offices in the region serving the ultra-wealthy of the Middle East. In fact, we recently interviewed a family office professional based in Israel. We asked Tal Speilman of the Shekel Group, a leading multi-family office based in Israel, the following:
Have you seen strong growth in Israel and the Middle East for the family concept as well?
Tal Speilman: Well of course, I think that one of the differences between Israel and Europe, or the United States is Israel has, we have families where actually few or about 50 families that should use the wealth management, and using the wealth management, and they are one of the oldest families here in Israel, but the difference between Israel and other places is we have because of the high tech industry that many Israelis were involved in. So we have let’s say, let’s call it young money. Some people that are relatively young and then suddenly they grow a lot of money, and I’m talking about tens of millions of dollars. They don’t really know how to handle it. So I think about the 2/3rds of the clients of the family offices here in Israel are from the high tech industry.
With a high price of oil, Israel won’t be the only source of clients for family offices. We expect high growth for the region if current economic conditions improve and the price of oil remains high, as much of the wealth being created is correlated to the petroleum production in the region.
