Jim Gibbs

James A. Gibbs is a founder of Five States Energy Company (1985), and serves as Chairman of the Board of Managers, and as a Manager of the affiliate Five States Energy Capital, LLC.

Mr. Gibbs received BS and MS degrees in geology from the University of Oklahoma. Following two years’ service in the US Navy as a communications officer, he was employed by The California Company (now Chevron-Texaco) in New Orleans and Lafayette, Louisiana. In 1964 he opened an office in Dallas, Texas, as a consulting geologist and independent oil and gas producer. In 1972 he founded Petroleum Resources, Inc., which he later sold.

He has initiated drilling prospects, purchased and sold oil and gas leases, and operated producing properties. As a consultant, he served as the exploration managers of Petrus Operating Company from 1975 to 1978, Cornell Oil Company from 1978 to 1981, and Lyco Energy Company from 1981 to 1983. Over the years he has participated in drilling hundreds of wells, primarily in Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma.

He is a past President and an Honorary Life Member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), the largest geological organization in the world, and is currently Chairman of the AAPG Foundation’s Board of Trustees. He is a member of the National Petroleum Council, and serves on the Board of Visitors of OU’s Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy, the University of Texas’ Advisory Council of the Jackson School of Geosciences, and other professional and industry organizations. Mr. Gibbs is a frequent lecturer at professional meetings and at various universities.
