James B BertlesJim is a Managing Director and Principal of the Firm, and is responsible for working with clients and their advisors, developing tax and estate planning solutions for clients and marketing the Firm’s services. He is also actively involved in strategic decision-making issues and oversees the Firm’s relations with attorneys.

Jim has worked for over 15 years at the highest levels of the trust and investment businesses following a 20-year career in law. Prior to joining Tiedemann in 2008, Jim was President and Chief Operating Officer of Brown Brothers Harriman Trust Company, N.A., responsible for all trust, fiduciary and tax activities in the United States. From 1999 to 2004, he was a Managing Director of Brown Brothers Harriman & Co., responsible for all investment and fiduciary activities in Florida. Prior to Brown Brothers Harriman, Jim practiced law in Connecticut, New York and Florida at the law firms of Cummings & Lockwood (Associate), Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft (Partner and a member of the Firm’s Management Committee) and Gunster, Yoakley & Stewart (Partner).

Jim is involved in numerous charitable and civic activities. His recent positions include member of the Vestry, Executive Committee and Search Committee as well as Senior Warden and Chancellor of Bethesda-By-The-Sea Episcopal Church; Chairman of the Executive Committee of Professional Advisors of the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties; Chairman of the Town of Palm Beach Zoning Commission; a Director of the Palm Beach Civic Association, the Palm Beach Community Chest/United Way, and Palm Beach Crime Watch; a member of the Executive Committee of the Trust and Investment Division of the New York Bankers Association; a member of the Executive Committee of Trust Management Association, Inc.; and a Director and Chairman of the Planned Giving Committee of the Norton Museum.

Jim earned a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from Fordham University Law School and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Political Science from Amherst College, and is a graduate of The Choate School. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC), is Board-Certified by the Florida Bar in Wills, Trusts and Estate Law, and has served on several State and County Bar Committees.

Originally from Greenwich, Connecticut, Jim has lived in Palm Beach, Florida, with his wife, Lisa, and three children since 1985.
