Introduction to Asia

Asia is the world’s largest continent with the highest population of any continent.  3,879,000,000 people live in Asia, according to a rough estimate.  Asia has the second largest nominal GDP of all continents, second only to Europe, but the biggest when measured in Purchasing Power Parity.  A Citigroup study found 9 of 11 Global Growth Generator countries coming from Asia, largely spurred on by population and income growth. The nin countries are Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Mongolia, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.

Asia is rapidly developing economically and in terms of wealth, as a new generation of affluent families and individuals look to preserve and grow their wealth.  Asian economies like Singapore, India, China and Japan grow rapidly, there is a lot of wealth being created in the region. This trend is expected to continue as these emerging economies join the world stage as more pivotal players in the international economy.

Here is a video I recorded while in Tokyo, Japan.  I speak primarily on family offices in Asia and the growing family office industry in Asia.

Why Asia

Asia is widely expected to be the biggest region of growth in the coming years.  China’s economy has been projected to surpass America’s as the biggest in the world by 2030 and India is rivaling China as the next up-and-coming economy.  Add those two future economic powerhouses to the already well-established international business centers of Singapore, Japan, South Korea and others and you can see why Asia has become the continent to watch.

How does this relate to family offices?  There is rapidly growing number of high-net-worth individuals and families in Asia, the people who have benefited from the boom in the economy.  This makes it a highly attractive region for family offices that want to tap into that wealth.

Family Offices in Asia

Asian countries have quickly embraced the family office concept, in perhaps a shorter amount of time than one would have expected.  There are an ever-growing number of family offices setting up offices in Asia to attract affluent families and high-net-worth individuals.

In the next decade there will be a lot of wealth changing hands in Asian families and family offices can help with this process.  While there is still some distrust of financial advisers, it appears that this is changing and more Asian families are beginning to adjust to the idea of seeking a family office for wealth management services.  The potential for family office growth in Asia is incredibly huge as there is already a lot of wealth being created in the region.
