Introduction to North America

North America is comprised of the following sovereign states and countries: Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, the United States of America.  There are also a number of territories sometimes included in North America. The continent has more than 500 million people and includes some of the most highly developed economies in the world and many economies that are still developing or are of a much smaller scale than that of say, Mexico, Canada or the United States.

Why North America

While some of the countries in North America are not considered extremely wealthy, Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas, the United States and a few other North American countries have substantial amounts of wealth.  The disparity between countries makes it hard to classify North America as a predominately wealthy continent, like you might argue Europe.  However, it is home to the US which is currently the largest economy in the world.  In terms of GDP purchasing power parity, as of 2010, the United States ranks number one with $13.86 trillion.  In many ways, Canada resembles its southern neighbor, especially in the large amount of wealth and the impressive size of its economy relative to its population. The United States, Mexico and Canada lead North America’s banking and financial sectors and contribute the most economically.  They are also thet home to most of the wealth in the continent.

Family Offices in North America

The primary destination for family offices in North America is in Mexico, Canada, and especially the United States.  The U.S. alone is home to more than 3,000 family offices currently operating in this country, more than any other one country has–making it the biggest family office hub in the world.  Canada and Mexico also have considerable wealth and there are many family offices set up in these countries to serve the needs of families and high-net-worth individuals.

The other, less wealthy countries in North America also make up a portion of family offices worldwide, however, the majority reside in the U.S., Mexico and Canada.  As interest in family offices continues to grow, it is expected that more and more family offices will open offices in North America–and not only in the United States.
