Introduction to Germany
Germany probably needs little introduction because it has long been a major player in international business and its central location in Europe has made it a key member of the European Union. Germany has a stable government, a strong financial system and an economy that has recovered remarkably well from the financial crisis. Germany is the world’s fourth largest economy in terms of nominal GDP and the fifth largest in terms of purchasing power parity. Of the world’s 500 largest stock-market-listed companies measured by revenue in 2010, the Fortune Global 500, 37 are headquartered in Germany.

Why Germany?
All of the economic successes listed in the introduction explain the large amount of wealth in the country. Germany has been an economic power in Europe for years and the number of successful businesses in the country have led to a high number of wealthy families and high-net worth individuals. There are many family offices in the country and surrounding European nations that are looking to serve these wealthy clients.

Family Offices in Germany

It is sometimes thought that Germany is not a ripe location for family offices because Germans are often said to be skeptical of alternative investments like hedge funds and therefore will be less open to a family office that invests in alternative investments like private equity and hedge funds. However, a recent study found that this is not the case. German family offices actually invest quite heavily in hedge funds, which surprised many analysts. In fact, among the surveyed German family offices, many of them said that they expected to increase their allocations to hedge funds.

This finding suggests that the German public and German family offices are warming up to hedge funds and other alternative investments which is a good indicator that family offices will similarly grow in the country as more and more wealthy families seek to make greater returns and protect their wealth through family offices. Furthermore, there are a number of very popular family office events held in Germany because there is such a high interest among wealthy German families and high-net-worth individuals in family offices.
As Germans continue to warm up to the idea of family offices and hedge funds, we expect even more family offices to open in Germany.
